Restless leg syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a common condition of the nervous system that causes an overwhelming and irresistible urge to move the legs. Estimates are that around 10% of people suffer from RLS at some stage in their lives. It often occurs during sleeping hours and can cause severe insomnia. In the majority of cases there's no obvious cause (i.e. it's termed and some other movement disorders.
Despite intensive research efforts (it was first isolated in 1940) its 'mechanism of action' in successfully treating a range of neurological disorders is currently unknown.
There is still some debate about scientific proof of its efficacy in treatments of anxiety, nausea, glaucoma, chronic pain and as an anti-psychotic. Nevertheless, its use - both formally and informally - is now very widespread, and it's no longer a restricted substance in many countries.
