Organogels

An Organogel is a class of semi-solid chemical gel formed from a liquid organic phase within a three-dimensional, cross-linked network.

The gels form either through polymerisation, or by so-called 'self assembly' (believed to be a combination of Van der Walls forces and hydrogen bonding). For the most part, the second mode is not yet explained. Mathematical predictions of whether complex organic molecules will form gels or not are only partially accurate.

The formulation of an accurate theory of gel formation that correctly predicts gelation parameters (such as time, rate, and structure) of a broad range of materials is highly sought after for both commercial and intellectual reasons."
