Lichen sclerosis
First described in 1875, Lichen Sclerosis (LS) is a chronic, non-infectious skin complaint which causes whitish, easily bruised, itchy, sore, crusty lesions. It can occur anywhere on the body, but is more common on the genitals.
The cause is unknown. Researchers are currently trying to find out if it's linked to auto-immune imbalances, viral infections, hormone imbalances, or caused by genetic faults.
We still know very little regarding the aetiology and patho-physiology of LS and thus have not been able to utilize targeted therapies or advocate effective prevention."
