The origin of the hand-held percussion instrument known as// Castanets// is unknown.

They were in use in the 1700s, but are probably much older. Possibly related to the Roman instrument called //Crotalum//.

The name is from the diminutive of //castaña// - 'chestnut' in Spanish.
