====== Sulfasalazine ====== //Sulfasalazine//, sold under brand names //Azulfidine, Salazopyrin, Sulazine// and others, is a 'first line' prescription drug used to treat [[content:medicine:diseases:r-z:rheumatoid_arthritis]], [[content:medicine:diseases:r-z:ulcerative_colitis]] and [[content:medicine:diseases:a-f:crohns_disease]]. It was first approved for use in the US in 1950. Despite more than 70 years of general use, and extensive research, the 'mechanism of action' of the drug - either for rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis or Crohn's - is unknown. >Sulfasalazine is in the disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) family of medications. __It is unclear exactly how it works.__ One proposed mechanism is the inhibition of prostaglandins, resulting in local anti-inflammatory effects in the colon. >\\ Source : [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfasalazine|Wikipedia]]
