As the paper cited above notes, although it has been known for many years that general 'wear and tear' damage, and specific injury, can lead to the development of osteoarthritis, the exact biological pathways are currently unknown.

The condition results in the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. A 2023 study suggests that a possible contributing factor could be imbalanced changes in the ubiquitous mammalian Synovial Fluid (SF), the joint lubricant which contains biomolecules including hyaluronan, lubricin, and phospholipids.
