Wikenigma - an Encyclopaedia of Unknowns

This is a wiki specifically dedicated to documenting known gaps in human knowledge.

A directory of unanswered questions about which there's general agreement (especially amongst experts) , that nobody has the answer. (example here)

In other words, an encyclopaedia of 'Known Unknowns'.

( 'Known Knowns' are of course extensively recorded at Wikipedia.)

“The search for the impossible is part of what intelligence is about”
Jerome Bruner

“If we want to solve a problem that we have never solved before, we must leave the door to the unknown ajar.”
Richard Feynman

“[…] it is the unknown that drives us as scientists. If we knew it all, science would ossify.”
Marcus du Sautoy

“If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research would it?”

The idea is to inspire and promote interest in scientific and academic research by highlighting opportunities to investigate problems - ones which no-one has yet been able to solve. That's to say, an attempt to build a curiosity stimulation engine.

Content policies

Wherever possible, Wikenigma content should include reference links to previously published findings and/or comments from respected sources.

Ideas for new topics are always welcomed, from experts and non-expert alike - if you're not sure if they'll be accepted by other editors, put them in the 'proposed_content' section for approval. The easiest way to create a new page is to use the 'Start a new page' link (above left).

Excluded categories

Unfalsifiables – ideas which cannot by definition ever be proved one way or the other [example] are to be avoided - but with a special exception for philosophical or mathematical concepts that are supported by reasoned arguments about (or proofs of) their un-provability - a.k.a. 'Known Uknowables' [example]

Original research - items which have no supporting external references are not encouraged.

Sorry, but Wikenigma is not the place for conspiracy theories, dreams, or such things as :

• Afterlife Mysteries • Mediums and Mystics • Religious Phenomena • Secret Societies • Magic and Sorcery • Prophecy and Divination • Objects of Mystery and Power • Places of Mystery and Power • Ghosts and Phantoms • Mysterious Creatures • Superstitions • Strange Customs • Taboos • Urban Legends • Invaders from Outer Space, or • Alien Abductions etc etc
