Alpha effect

The Alpha effect was first described by William P. Jencks, Joan Carriuolo in 1960.

It refers to the increased nucleophilicity [explain] of a molecule due to the presence of an adjacent (alpha) atom with lone pair electrons.

There are various theories to offer an explanation, but as yet no agreement in the chemical establishment.
